See How Colorful Decorating Ideas Transformed This 100-Year-Old, 2,500-Square-Foot Craftsman

Craftsman-style homes are often known for their beautiful built-ins, which include both cabinetry and bookshelves. Here a beautiful wooden wardrobe takes center stage in a rich, dark wood among an otherwise light and bright interior. Stained glass is a key element in many Arts and Crafts style interiors, finding its way into light fixtures, window panes, and doors. Stained glass windows are perfect for private spaces, where they allow ample light but block prying eyes.

A pair of mustard yellow accent chairs, the Regis lounge chair from Article, add a highlight of color to the formal living room's soft gray scheme, echoing the artwork. Houseplants add further texture and interest to the scheme and keep the room looking lively and fresh. Art was an important consideration in the project, specifically the Latin American works that Deane has collected for years. “We wanted it to feel like there was a conversation between the art and the furniture,” Lavonne Walker says.

Is Craftsman Design Your Style?

Pedestal sinks are often featured in the Craftsman home because of their historical reference. While pedestal sinks offer abundant period character, they lack storage, so they utilize baskets or shelving for sundries. If space allows, a freestanding vintage cabinet or dresser can provide storage and looks appropriate. Still available in their original cast iron and enamel combination, newer models are also made of acrylic. A garden or pedestal tub is a modern interpretation with simple shaping that works well with style, particularly in an angular version, as shown in the intro image. Craftsman, or Arts and Crafts style (the terms are often used interchangeably), is derived from the late 19th-century Arts and Crafts movement.

The craftsman living room style is known for its handcrafted custom design elements, high ceilings with exposed beams, open layout, and the warmth of its natural wood finishes. This Craftsman-Style contemporary house has three pairs of stone tapered posts that support the exposed beams of the windows and the main door entryway. The dark roofing is a nice complement to the wooden walls that are illuminated by warm yellow light from the wall-mounted lamps.

In the interior design world, styles and aesthetics are born, transformed, and sometimes merged to create new and fresh aesthetics. Among the style blends is the ever-popular contemporary Craftsman design style, marrying timeless Craftsman features with modern contemporary sensibilities. This elegant design features the familiar light arched shape between legs, plus a set of slim vertical slats for protecting your nicknacks and books. The chunky, thick wood design houses a discreet drawer on the lower level, a perfect little touch of utility for your living room.

The side of the house opens to this section through a row of glass doors that fold to the sides. The walls of this Craftsman-Style house with an open-gabled roof match the wooden floor of the platform at the back of the house. It forms a comfortable patio that gives an overlooking view of the surrounding landscape of colorful shrubs and trees. This spectacular house has high arches and gray roofs that match the surrounding mountains.

Combine it all, and you’ve got a cohesive, enveloping palette that captures the craftsman style’s effortless blending of rustic and refined. Texture is key too – layered materials in coordinating tones elevate that organic feel. Custom wood finishes – One of the most distinctive attributes of this style is the warmth of its wood finishes and details.

Craftsman-Style Homes (Exteriors)

Geometric shapes, stained glass-look shades, and warm or dark metallic finishes, such as brass, iron, and bronze, typify the lighting of the style. Available in many options, from flush mount pendants to sconces to chandeliers, lighting fixtures are a fantastic means to convey Craftsman design in a small space. Moldings and casements offer an opportunity to showcase the artisanship and beauty of wood carpentry.

This living room has a high white ceiling adorned by a dark iron chandelier hanging over the sofas. These sofas are facing the fireplace that has a stone housing with a wall-mounted colorful painting that contrasts the black and white hues. This is an interior that has a spacious air to it due to the high cathedral ceiling that is given a wooden shiplap finish and studded with pin lights. The sliding glass doors also serve the same purpose, giving this interior an illusion of being bigger. The back of the house forms an open-air section that has an outdoor modern hearth to provide warmth to those on the woven wicker sofas and lawn chairs on a stone flooring.

When designer Meg Lonergan and her husband, Tim, went house hunting in Houston's Montrose neighborhood, they were excited to find a 100-year-old, 2,500-square-foot Craftsman that needed very little work. Read their story, and see how the designer turned her humble Craftsman home into a colorful testing ground for her latest decorating ideas. 'This second living room is a small escape that needed little touches to bring it all together,' says Ranize.

While certain design elements in Craftsman homes feel traditional, they have a more simplified style with less ornamentation or detail. Any decoration is more restrained and play up natural or handcrafted features such as wood grain, metal finishes, and stained glass. In this type of home, the furnishings that look best are less fussy with the focus more on craftsmanship than embellishment. You’ll notice that the dark wood framing of this chair features a similar design to the previous chair, arranging a series of vertical slats between thick layers of natural wood. Curved wood pieces make for a warmly natural look, as does the light unvarnished tone.

In the Craftsman kitchen you may find an apron-front sink in fireclay, copper, or another material, sometimes with a nature-inspired design cast into the exposed side. Classic and timeless kitchen sink styles in stainless or porcelain are just as appropriate. A wall or deck-mount bridge faucet or other traditional style faucet is another common touch, as are natural wood cabinets and high ceilings with exposed beams and ceiling fans. If a view of nature is available, large windows and skylights will bring it inside. Interior kitchen lights traditionally feature warmer metal finishes and often artisan glass.

Instead of off-white, this room favors light yellow paint for the walls, combined with white moldings and accents. The furniture pieces in the room are pretty sparse – 2 armchairs with red tapestry fabric, two side chairs, and a piano. However, the combination of finishes and patterns is already enough to create this lively and elegant classic interior style. Heavy wooden furniture pieces combined with fully upholstered furniture were used in this Mediterranean-style home. The spacious floor is divided into an open floor space and a compressed living area/entertainment room. Unlike usually exposed ceilings with plain wood beams, this ceiling features intricate latticework and an interesting shape reminiscent of a ski chalet.

You can also see the classic fireplace, large mantle, and complementary trim throughout the entire space. The light natural wood tone lends itself to rustic spaces, or as a counterpoint to more modern rooms. The Craftsman design allows for unique and useful features like the lift-and-hide panel that reveals a pull-out surface. This rich natural wood coffee table is an exemplary form of the Craftsman style, with thick clearly defined slats and solid legs forming a simple but elegant shape. Canonically, the craftsman style living room seems to work well as a cozy living space when there isn’t a lot of room to work with and relies on warm colors and an abundance of furniture to create a sense of home.
